Heidelberg
Hoy he estado en una fiesta con unas cuantas alemanas de Heidelberg y hemos hablado de que su ciudad no fue bombardeada en la segunda guerra mundial. Me han dicho que no sabían por qué se había librado Heidelberg.
A mí me habían dicho que fue porque un comandante-general o similar estadounidense, había estudiado de joven allí, y les libró. Se lo he contado a estas chicas y no me han sabido responder. Así que he hecho una pequeña investigación (en el Google):
The only city that was not bombed at all was Heidelberg. That was because of the university there. There was a pact between Germany and Britain. Britain would not bomb Heidelberg if Germany would not bomb Oxford and Cambridge. [1]

En cambio, aqui un estudiante de Oxford de aquella época dice:
A superstition current at the time was that if the British didn’t bomb Heidelberg, the Germans wouldn’t bomb Oxford. However, in case Hitler should become tired of our not bombing Heidelberg, and decided to bomb Oxford anyway, it was decided in the summer term of 1941 to mount a full-scale Civil Defence exercise over a weekend. With this impending, I told the authorities that I didn’t think I could manage the All Souls Fire Control Centre single-handed, and they at once agreed to provide me with two keen volunteer assistants. These turned out to be Lord David Cecil and Dr A L Rowse.

En cambio, hay una señora/señorita llamada Judith Willms que en Amazon cuenta que:
I have a couple of problems with his German occupation information, but they are minor: I have always heard that Heidelberg wasn’t bombed because several high ranking military personnel from both the U.S. and Great Britain had attended college there. I like that story but can’t prove it.
Conclusión: Parece que no es cierto lo de los generales americanos, aunque la historia es bonita… Seguiré buscando.
