A Walk In the Park

I have mentioned several times how much I like to find some free time to take a walk in the most centric big park in Madrid, Retiro. Last week, I have been twice. One on a sunny warm Saturday morning, and also on a foggy weekday. Two totally different moments to realize Winter is here in a natural environment.

Chamberi Station

More than 90 years ago, a subway station was constructed in the very centric Chamberí neighbourhood. It was the first line of the current 14 subway lines. This station worked for about 50 years, until due to the increase in the number of passengers, the local subway company decided to lengthen the stations of this line to make them able to handle the new long trains they started to use.

Chamberí station had to be closed because its situation made too complicated the enlargement works… and so remained until a few years ago when Metro Madrid decided to open it as a museum, allowing their visitors to travel in the time to the 60′s.

Normally, every couple of minutes a train passes through that station, as the line 1 is still there… but the day I went none did so. I could enjoy the station with no noise, as a subway workers’ strike was collapsing Madrid. Furthermore, visitors thought the museum was part of the strike, and there were no trains and no people.

Spain won Netherlands 1:0 yesterday night in the 2010 World Cup Final for the first time in the history. Every city around Spain celebrated this victory, and especially Madrid.

It is incredible how the good work of a bunch of people generate so much positive energy in so many millions of people…

Este pasado mes he disfrutado unos cuantos días libres en Madrid, y aprovechando los primeros días soleados visité la terraza del Círculo de Bellas Artes, en plena calle Alcalá y con unas vistas bastante llamativas de una parte del centro de Madrid. Visita recomendada para visitantes… y para locales.

I am not particularly happy with the pictures I took (I still need to improve my night photography skills), but I want to keep them handy…

Esta semana leí esta noticia en la que daban cuenta de la segunda empresa que va a ofrecer el servicio de alquiler de coches en Madrid, también conocido como Car Sharing. Las dos empresas que ofrecen el servicio (Hertz y Respiro) tienen unos precios similares y distintos puntos de recogida del vehículo en lugares relativamente céntricos en Madrid (en los distritos Centro, Chamberí, Salamanca y Chamartín).

Esta idea, además de ecológica, me parece muy buena tanto para la empresa (que debe manejar unos suculentos márgenes) como para cierto perfil de clientes que requieren un vehículo cada cierto tiempo y para una cantidad de tiempo razonablemente pequeña.

Cuando lees esto, es inevitable pensar si a uno mismo le saldría rentable comprarse un coche nuevo o usar este servicio. Yo lo he hecho, y he hecho unos cuantos números. Primero, he empezado a buscar cuanto cuesta comprar y mantener a lo largo de toda la vida útil un coche. Afortunadamente, encontré esta tabla de costes hecha por el CEDEX y la personalicé un poco.

Y luego pensé, ¿cuánto uso en mi día a día el coche? Voy al trabajo en metro; al centro, en metro… De vez en cuando lo uso para ir a algún sitio en las afueras de la ciudad, para la compra alguna vez, y para alguna excursión por los alrededores. Más o menos un uso a la semana de unos pocos kilómetros y cada ciertas semanas, alguna excursión de más kilómetros y prácticamente un día.

Esto, usando Hertz, por ejemplo, me supondría unos 2.500 euros – 3.000 euros al año. Es decir, un margen de 1.000 euros para emplear en alquileres de coches para las vacaciones, y todavía estaría ahorrando bastante dinero, sin tener que preocuparnos por el mantenimiento, el aparcamiento, limpieza, etc. Esto, claro está, para alguien que: 1) viva en el centro, y 2) no use el coche a diario (no vale pues, para los que van en coche al trabajo, o llevan a los niños al colegio en coche)

Obviamente, hay otra parte por la que podría no compensar sustituir un coche en propiedad por un servicio de este tipo y es la disponibilidad. Estas empresas garantizan que tendrías coche si planeas con antelación tus necesidades, lo cual no siempre es posible…

Pero creo que lo que más les hace peligrar su negocio es lo que nos cuesta (psicológicamente) en este país pagar por servicios como el alquiler habiendo opciones de compra, aunque no salga rentable como es el caso. Se admiten apuestas.

Snowing in Madrid

I forgot to share here in the blog some pictures I took on January 8th, when it snowed in Madrid. I was lucky enough to take a flight that night which was able to land in Madrid airport. It took quite a long time till we got into the terminal, but it was really worth waiting for this view of my aircraft and some others in front of T-4.

Madrid Christmas Lights

Christmas are almost here, and Madrid main streets are illuminated with Christmas’ lights. This is a big event, and people are normally waiting to see the final result of weeks of work… and I also walked a couple of (freezing) nights to see the lights and take some pictures.
